Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide composed of the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), the naturally occurring hormone that stimulates the pituitary gland to release growth hormone (GH). Sermorelin was approved by the FDA in the late 1990s under the brand name Geref Diagnostic, primarily for diagnostic use in paediatric growth hormone deficiency (GHD). It functions by stimulating endogenous GH production rather than replacing GH directly, potentially offering a more physiologically regulated hormone profile.

In clinical studies, such as a trial published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (1999), Sermorelin effectively increased serum GH and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). has also been explored off- label in adults for age-related GH decline, with some reports indicating improved sleep, energy, body composition, and recovery. Unlike synthetic GH therapy, Sermorelin was voluntarily discontinued by the manufacturer in the U.S. for commercial reasons, not due to safety or efficacy concerns.
